The
March
in March was another success with
over 500 people demonstrating for equal rights and justice on
a beautiful, warm spring day in
Tokyo. With entertainment from Andean band Rupai Pays and a Brazilian
Capoeira performance the pre-march festivities
were accompanied by
speeches from Louis Carlet, Ippei Torii and Ali Nusrat of Zentoitsu,
Satoshi Murayama and Monica Nakahodo from the KCU Ms Takaya from SMJ
and the nambu FWC President Dave Ashton. El Pueblo Unido also
participated in the rally with a splendid version of Venceremos. After
two hours the march moved offf at 3pm to cut through the heart of
Shibuya with marchers echoing sprehicall chants from a sound truck at
the head. All in all a good day was had by those who attended and
everything passed without incident.

The March in March is
a multinational gathering
and protest march
that takes place each March. It began with foreign workers calling for
job security and an end to discrimination, but with the deteriorating
work environment in Japan “job security and equality” have become the
goals of not only foreigners but all who work in Japan. The government
claims to have created jobs, but the ranks of working poor and unstable
jobs (dispatch, part-time, temp, contract, subcontract, freelance) have
increased. The young, the elderly, foreigners and women live with
anxiety about their futures. Workaholic men work themselves literally
to death. Inequality and disparity do not make workers happy.
The March in March is
open to anyone who works or
lives in Japan. This year, over 500
people took to the streets in
Tokyo to demand a
stable work environment, free from illegal dismissals, unpaid wages, or
discrimination.
