Check out the video links below on the Banned Stop the Iraq War march in London!

On Monday 8th October a Stop the Iraq War Demonstration organised by the Stop the War Coalition took place in London. The march had been banned by the police using archaic anti-democratic laws under The 1839 Sessional Orders legislation.

Sessional Orders are passed at the beginning of every Parliamentary session under an 1839 law to ensure free passage for MP’s to arrive and depart from Parliament. Similar Orders apply to the House of Lords.

Under the 2005 SOCPA legislation any march / demonstration in the vicinity of Parliament must be allowed to take place so long as a minimum of 6 days notice is given to the police.

Something more restrictive was needed to stop the demonstration, so the 1839 legislation passed many years before Britain had universal suffrage was used in an attempt to ban the 8 October Troops Out march.

The size and spirit of the march reflected the deep public disgust at the government's continued support for Bush's wars. It also showed the determination of the movement. A feeder march of students from SOAS, Kings, LSE and Scotland were received with cheers as they approached the square, chanting ‘defy the ban, we will march’

The police's attempt to ban the march, no doubt at the insistence of government ministers, served only to increase the turnout. The scale of the response and the tremendous public stand taken by Tony Benn, Walter Wolfgang, Brian Eno and others made it impossible for the police to stop the march on the day. And so a disturbing assault on our civil liberties was overturned and the views of the anti war majority were delivered to parliament.

Remember: the reason the system is unjust is because it's not made by or for us!
