Welcome to the
Hashimoto Spring Page!
The
next Hashimoto Film
& Discussion is on
Sunday
29 June from
16:00 at Salji
Sulejman
and the
gang will screen Fahrenheit 451 the guest speakers will be 3 Tachikawa
activists, Toshiyuki Obora, Nobuhiro Onishi and Sachimi Takada who were found guilty by the supreme
court for distributing anti-war fliers to the families of the Japanese
"Self Defence" Forces. With regard to the film,
451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper
burns. In this grim look at a fascist future, firemen have taken on a
new duty of starting fires as well as putting them out (complete with
flame throwers), specifically with the task of burning all books, as
way of suppressing independent thought and action in the public. The
film's story centers around a young fireman, Guy Montag, who finds
himself questioning his job, as he encounters a beautiful young
woman, and learns about an underground of rebels who each memorize the
entire contents of a book, so that they can preserve it even without
the use of paper...Adapted from the modern classic novel by Ray
Bradbury and made in 1966, the message of the film in our post 911
world which is characterised by mass media manipulation on a scale not
seen before, with embedded reporters in Iraq and biometric data
gathering at ports of entry, is as pertinent as ever. As we are
encouraged to consume tv news and play computer games, think about a
world where everyone learned to read again!
